weird Purim custom- useless plates

I gave and got numerous mishlach manot (mostly received from people I gave them to) .  I noticed that some of them added a paper or plastic plate.

What’s up with that?  Do they think we don’t have plates at home?  And who needs plates to eat hamantashen etc anyhow?  (Actually, the plates are the opposite of utilitarian, in that they add to the bulk of the package and make it harder to carry).

I may be wrong–it certainly won’t be the first time–but my understanding is that some people are of the opinion that a plate or basket is required for mishloach manot. My husband and I use zip-type plastic bags for our mishloach manot packages.
