when to have a megillah reading

It seems to me that the Purim first night should be festive, full of costumes and fun and food and maybe alcohol (depending on the age of the crowd).

So i was really disappointed when the shtiebl near my apartment had just a no-frills megillah reading with a small reception afterwards.

If a shul (at least one in an area surrounded by plenty of alternatives)  isn’t going to really CELEBRATE Purim instead of just treating it like another minyan, shouldn’t they just close for Purim so its members can go to more fun shuls?

You could say: people can go other places.  But my shtiebl really begs people to come make the minyan, so I don’t think it should hammer us into coming and then deprive us of the opportunity to have an appropriate Purim.

On the other hand, I suppose if this is the worst of my problems, life is really good.
