how liberal ideas lead to conservative conclusions and vice versa

The basic idea of Conservative Judaism (OK, one basic idea) is that Judaism has to evolve to meet the needs of the age.  But paradoxically it seems to me that (if you judge by intermarriage rates etc) Orthodoxy seems to meet those needs better at this particular moment in American history- in particular, the need for Judaism to sustain itself.

In the political arena too, it seems to me that liberal logic may lead to conservative conclusions and vice versa.  Like many hawks I believe that terrorism is really, really important and that Sept. 11 was a pretty big deal. But this idea moved me towards a more isolationist view of foreign policy rather than a neo-connish view.  If the world is full of very, very angry people who can wield immense destructive power even without controlling a nation-state, to me that’s an argument for trying harder to avoid antagonizing any of them.
