Dvar Torah- Vayelech

Normally I don’t post twice when there’s a double portion but there’s something in this one that has puzzled me in the past, and Tigay has an interesting answer.

Moses states that after God punishes Jews for idolatry, they will admit that it is because “our God is not in our midst.” (Deut. 31:17).  And then God still “will keep [God’s] countenance hidden.” (Deut. 31:18). Why?  Haven’t the Jews admitted their wrongdoing?

Tigay explains that the JPS translation is missing something.  The word used for “our God” is not “Elohai”- a term that could mean “our Gods.” Obviously this implies continued idolatry.
